Combatting Discrimination and Racism against Indigenous Peoples in Calgary
Founded in 2005, The Calgary Indigenous Human Rights Circle was formed to promote awareness of racism and discrimination issues in Calgary toward identifying education and training opportunities.
Our Circle supports organizations and individuals’ efforts to incorporate the Human Rights Principles enshrined in UNDRIP and the TRC Calls to Action Dealing with Discrimination with the minimum standard being “nothing about us without us.”
On this site, you can read about the creation of the Circle, what we’ve been up to in the most recent year, and what is coming up for us. Take a look through our Past, our Present, and what we have in the works for the Future.
The Logo Design
The Circle’s logo was designed by Piikani artist Kristy North Peigan. In her own words she describes the process:
This logo was created to represent the past, present, and future of who we are. It was developed collaboratively in a talking circle, being the source of inspiration to how we move forward into the future. The Golden Mean is also included in the iconography so that we always remember to find a common ground between extremes. This logo will hopefully carry forward our efforts into a legacy for future generations.
Kristy North Peigan, is a Blackfoot free-lance artist/designer/illustrator from the Piikani First Nation. She graduated from Alberta College of Arts and Design (now University of the Arts) receiving her Bachelor of Design in Illustration.
She has designed logos for indigenous spaces for post-secondary institutions in YYC, as well as partnering with small business and community groups to build brands. She has created works of cultural splicing traditional native style of art mixed with a contemporary pop culture style which has been showcased at different comic expos in western Canada.
